savoring the last days of summer, surf and sale-ing
Each year, I'm so grateful for the long weekend that comes with the Labor Day holiday. It's a built-in reminder to savor the last days of summer. We spent our holiday in Montauk, where the surfboards were lined up at Ditch Plains (our dog even took a dip!), I caught up on my reading, and we feasted and sang the night away. Alas, fall is almost upon us—officially September 22nd—but I'm all for lingering in these last summer moments, especially as they glint off the lap of shimmering waves. My husband dragged our dog Clyde out into the surf...on his surfboard. Clyde didn't like it (look at that expression!), but everyone else thoroughly enjoyed the moment. I am obsessed with these books—Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple and Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Finishing two books in two weeks felt great, since during the school year it's so busy I find my reading list gathering dust. But, I'm saying it here and now, I'm going to commit myself to at least one book every three weeks! Any suggestions for what I should read next? We had one last beach fire Sunday night. My friend Elizabeth planned the festivities, which included fried chicken, pizza, yummy salads, and, of course, s'mores. She brought musical instruments for the kids to play—shakers, bongo drums, triangles, and more—and Allen played the guitar for us to all sing along to (Beatles to Adele to One Direction!). And while fall is coming, that doesn't mean our summer wardrobes have to immediately go to the back of our closets. We have some wonderful summer sale pieces—now an additional 15% off for one week only with code "summer15"—that will transition nicely into fall. The Ava dress (top left) is perfect with jeans; the Annie dress (top right) pairs easily with our new navy leggings; and graphic tees always make the summer-fall leap (a starry option for kids bottom left).
